List of grape varieties |
Donauveltliner is a fungus-resistant grape and white wine variety ( PIWI ). The main aim of breeding was to achieve the highest possible resistance to the fungal diseases powdery mildew and downy mildew as well as to botrytis infestation.
origin
The Donauveltliner is a new breed carried out in 1996 by Ferdinand Regner at the Höhere Bundeslehranstalt and Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Klosterneuburg.
ancestry
The variety is a cross between Grüner Veltliner × Seyval Blanc (SV 5276).
Ampelographic features
- The shoot tip is open and hairy medium to thickly woolly. The lack of to weak anthocyanin coloration in the shoot tip is noticeable.
- The young leaf is yellow on the upper side, the underside has medium to thick hairs between the leaf veins .
- The fully grown leaf is pentagonal with 3 to 5 lobes and has a flat profile. The main nerves on the upper side of the leaf and the base of the stalk do not show any anthocyanins. The leaf blade is slightly waffled and slightly blistered. The leaf teeth are convex on both sides. The stalk bay is open to closed with a V-shaped base; the peduncle is not bounded by nerves. Teeth in the stalk bay and in the side bays are missing. The side bays have a shallow depth with a V to U shape. The underside of the leaf has medium hairs and no bristles on the main nerves.
- The grape stem is medium-long (3–5 cm). The grapes are medium-long (14-18 cm) and have loose berries, some with a bit more dense berries. The basic cluster is cylindrical and has 1 to 3 wings, the partial cluster is missing or is to medium-sized. The berries are round to oval (length: 13–15 mm, width: up to 13 mm). The individual berry weight is comparatively low (up to 2 grams). The skin of the berries is green-yellow in color and the pulp is uncolored.
- The shoot growth is medium strong with semi-upright to upright shoots.
Maturity
The Donauveltliner ripens in the middle stage, but earlier than in the case of the Grüner Veltliner variety.
Properties, claims
The Donauveltliner grape variety has excellent winter frost resistance and resistance to downy mildew and oidium . In the case of autumn rainfall there is little tendency for the berries to burst. The grapes are much looser than the grapes of the Grüner Veltliner grape variety and therefore less susceptible to botrytis. There is also good tolerance to red burner , phomopsis, and black rot. As a result of these properties, only limited chemical plant protection is required.
Areas and locations that are too hot and dry are less suitable for growing Donauveltliner because of its early ripening and acidity loss. Otherwise, the viticultural requirements are similar to those of the Grüner Veltliner variety.
Yield
The yield is medium to high. The Donauveltliner trickles easily and therefore produces fluffy grapes. As a result, the yield is lower than that of the Grüner Veltliner.
Wine
The wines are fruity and balanced when they are young. However, the wine needs a certain degree of maturity before it can be consumed. As a mature wine, it is very similar to the Grüner Veltliner.
