Grüner Veltliner ( vɛltˈliːnɐ or fɛltˈliːnɐ ) or Weißgipfler is a white wine variety . It is the most important and most widespread grape variety from Austria and is often viewed abroad as the Austrian national variety. Above all, she finds optimal location conditions in Lower Austria .

origin

The Grüner Veltliner is the most important autochthonous grape variety from Lower Austria . The variety previously known as "(Green) Muscatel" can be traced back to the middle of the 16th century in Lower Austria.

ancestry

Natural crossing of Traminer × St. Georgen .

The second parent is referred to by the HBLA Klosterneuburg as St. Georgen after the place where it was found in St. Georgen am Leithagebirge . The grape may have been referred to locally as the green muscatel. The mother vine, which is around 400 years old, was badly damaged by vandalism in February 2011, so it was feared that it would no longer sprout. Comprehensive care made it possible to raise several shoots by May 2011. In June 2012, 400 vines were planted, the first grapes were harvested in 2014 and the maiden harvest was carried out in 2015.

The Grüner Veltliner is not related to the Frühroten Veltliner and Roten Veltliner .

Ampelographic features

  • The shoot tip is very hairy with white wool.
  • The leaf is medium-sized, five-lobed and deeply indented.
  • The grapes are very large, densely berried, conical, shouldered, with large berries.

Maturity: medium late

Properties, claims

  • The vines have medium to strong shoots.
  • Requires early to medium-early locations and prefers medium-heavy to light, but not too dry soils. Loess soils are very suitable.
  • On soils that are too heavy and lime-rich, the variety easily gets chlorosis .

Yield

With good soil and location conditions, the variety regularly delivers high yields. The very fertile variety requires appropriate yield regulation if certain quality levels are to be achieved.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the area under vines planted with Grüner Veltliner in Germany was 24 hectares in 2016. In South Tyrol , cultivation is concentrated in the Eisack Valley , where in warm locations between 500 and 650 meters above sea level. d. The Grüner Veltliner can also be found overseas, for example in Australia and especially in New Zealand . Currently about 40 hectares have been planted. In the United States there are around a dozen Grüner Veltliner producers in various states. Further cultivation trials are currently being undertaken in India.

Wine

Their wines impress with their intense bouquet and freshness. Typically, pleasant aromas of white pepper or tobacco can be identified, but the more intense nose and the taste of citrus and fruit ( peach ) are usually excellent . A good Grüner Veltliner impresses with its freshness on the palate and, contrary to popular opinion, which is based on many rather moderate Grüner Veltliners, can be stored accordingly. When tasting older wines, high-quality Veltliner impress time and again with their amazing freshness.

The first Austrian DAC wine, the Weinviertel DAC , was dedicated to the Grüner Veltliner . Since 2006 there has also been another DAC made from this grape variety with the Traisental DAC , since the 2007 vintage a third - the Kremstal DAC, which is the first DAC to allow a reserve line in the white wine sector.
