Mixed sentence

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mixed sentence is the name for the cultivation of wine , which consists of different grape varieties in a vineyard, as well as the wine made from it.

In contrast to the cuvée , several grape varieties are grown together in one vineyard and, after the joint harvest, also pressed and fermented together to make grape must . Due to the different degrees of ripeness and the different degrees of acidity of the grape varieties, the original aim was to minimize the risk and ensure consistent wine quality. A desirable side effect is a significantly increased complexity of the end product. Today, the mixed sentence has been particularly popular in the Austrian wine-growing region of Vienna and in Styria (there under the name of mixed sentence ) and is considered a specialty. In 2008, the Italian organization Slow Food included the mixed sentence in the so-called Slow Food Ark of Taste and awarded the product the Presidio seal. As part of the 134 Presidio projects (formerly known as sponsorship groups), Slow Food is committed to preserving original production methods that are threatened with extinction.

In the course of EU regulation 607/2009 of July 14, 2009, which records the protected names of the respective member states, Austria was able to secure the designation "mixed sentence", i.e. H. no other country in the EU is allowed to use it to label wine bottles.

Since 2011 there has been a separate name for the Viennese mixed sentence , with which the name and the quality features are also specified in a regulation. At least three different grape varieties must be grown in a vineyard. The largest proportion of varieties must not be higher than 50% and the third largest proportion must be at least 10%. The Viennese mixed sentence is always a white wine and consists of up to 20 different grape varieties. Among others are used: Grüner Veltliner , Riesling , Pinot Blanc , Pinot Gris , Chardonnay , Neuburger , Gewürztraminer , Moscato Rosa , Jubiläumsrebe , Austrian White .

From the 2013 vintage, the wine also received the Districtus Austriae Controllatus (DAC) quality award .

For centuries, the Saxon so-called Schieler , a Rotling from a certain growing area in Saxony , has also been made from a mixed set of red and white grapes .
