This is located on the slopes of the Kahlenberg and the Nussberg with the wine-growing locations Nussdorf , Grinzing , Sievering , Heiligenstadt , Neustift am Walde and Salmannsdorf . Furthermore , around 260 hectares of vineyards are cultivated at the foot of the Bisamberg , north of the Danube. The traditional wine-growing locations such as Stammersdorf , Strebersdorf and Jedlersdorf are also located there . Smaller wine-growing regions can be found in the south of Vienna in Mauer and Oberlaa am Laaer Berg . The smallest vineyard in Vienna is little noticed on Schwarzenbergplatz in the city center.

history

Viticulture in Vienna is probably as old as the city itself. The first vines were already cultivated in Vienna at the time of the Celtic settlement “Vedunia” and the Roman military camp Vindobona . The Roman emperor Probus had wine cultivated here for his Roman legions. The Viennese vineyards can only be proven with certainty from the 12th century. At the time of the Middle Ages , the city was still completely surrounded by vineyards. However, in the course of increasing urbanization, many of them have been cleared. In 1784, Emperor Joseph II allowed the winegrowers to sell groceries from their own production together with their own wine. This created the basis for today's Viennese Heurigen culture , which secured the preservation of the remaining vineyards. Today there are around 640 wine growers and 180 wine taverns in Vienna. Almost 2.5 million liters of wine are produced every year.

Grape varieties

The main types of white wine are: Grüner Veltliner , Riesling , Pinot Blanc , Chardonnay and Welschriesling , and of the red wine: Blauer Zweigelt , Blauer Burgunder , Blauburger , Cabernet Sauvignon and St. Laurent . A traditional specialty of Viennese viticulture, which has experienced a renaissance in recent years, is the Viennese mixed sentence . Several white grape varieties are grown in one vineyard, harvested together and developed, which has also been DAC classified since 2011 .
