List of grape varieties |
Austrian white is an old autochthonous white wine variety from Austria, which is no longer important today. It was widespread in the second half before 1900 in Vienna and Lower Austria (Klosterneuburg). The wines are rich in acidity and also tasty in good years.
origin
Austrian white was a variety that was very widespread in Austria around the Wiener Kahlenberg in the second half of the 19th century ( Klosterneuburg , Weidling, Nussdorf, Heiligenstadt, Grinzing). The vineyards of Klosterneuburg Abbey were almost exclusively planted with this variety at that time; the pen is said to have spread the variety back then.
The variety is a natural crossing partner of ' Silvaner ', with which it was previously confused.
Ampelographic features
- The shoots are strong.
- The leaf is deeply lobed, toothed and hairless.
- The grape is large, long, with few branches and more loose than dense berries. The typical grape features are the berry stalks protruding at right angles. The berries are round, thick-skinned, yellow-green and, in early ripe years, pale pink in color
Maturity: late - maturity is only satisfactory in early years.
Yield
The variety brings very high yields.
properties
The variety tolerates bald pruning very well, so it is well suited for low stock culture and short pruning. From the fungal diseases it is very susceptible to Rote Brenner .
Wine
The wines are rich in acidity and also tasty in good years.
Babo and Mach write in their 1893 book: “The variety is very productive and makes tasty, but acidic wines. These were called mountain wines and were only drunk by Viennese wine drinkers after they had been mixed with water ”.
distribution
Today it is no longer relevant and can only be found on the smallest of areas in the vineyards of Kahlenbergerdorf , Gumpoldskirchen and in the grape range of the Höhere Bundeslehranstalt and Federal Office for Viticulture and Fruit Growing Klosterneuburg, in the Leth winery in Fels am Wagram and in the Wagner fire brigade winery in Vienna.
Intersections
Silvaner is a natural cross of 'Austrian White' × ' Traminer '. Since the variety 'Austrian White' only occurred in Vienna and Lower Austria, the 'Silvaner' variety is an autochthonous grape variety from Austria, as the natural cross probably took place here. It was brought to Germany, where it now has an area of 5074 ha - 5% of the total wine-growing area in 2013. In Germany she used to be called 'Austrian'.
