The white wine variety Frührote Veltliner is widespread in Austria . Its name is derived from its early maturity. The variety does not have high demands and is popular for making primeur wine because of its early maturity. The variety also has a certain importance as a table grape . It brings full, extract-rich, mild and low-bouquet wines.
Origin, descent
The Frührote Veltliner is a coincidental crossing of Silvaner × Rotem Veltliner from Austria.
Ampelographic features
- The shoot tip is light green and very woolly hairy with a reddish tinge.
- The shoot is very strong.
- The leaf is large, five-lobed and soft.
- The grape is large, dense, shouldered with bright red, thick-skinned berries. The berries reach a high sugar content and shrink when fully ripe.
- The variety is also used as a table grape .
Maturity: early
Expectations
Frühroter Veltliner makes no great demands on the location and can also cope with poor and medium-sized calcareous soils. The disadvantage is the relatively high sensitivity to winter and late frosts.

The variety delivers medium yields.
distribution
In Austria there are 368 hectares of this grape variety, almost 1.2% of the white wine-growing area. 80% of this is in the main cultivation areas in Lower Austria, the thermal region around Gumpoldskirchen and the southern Weinviertel , the Kamp and Kremstal valleys . There are 4 hectares in Germany (2014).
Wine
The wine is full, rich in extract, mild and poor in bouquet. It matures very quickly and is used for the Primeur wines. The wine is not suitable for longer storage.

- The variety ripens very early - primeur wine production.
- It has low demands on soil and location and has a medium tolerance to lime.
- disadvantage
- Is winter frost, late frost, susceptible to downy mildew , birds and wasps feeding.
- Delivers uncertain yields, if they are not ripe and due to winter frost damage.

Synonyms
