Properties, claims

The variety needs the best locations, is sensitive to winter frost, ripens late and is susceptible to botrytis. Makes little demands on the terroir and tolerates drought and high lime content in the soil.

Yield

The yields are high but erratic.

Wine

The Zierfandler is a late-ripening variety. It delivers extract-rich wines that have a delicate aroma and fruity acidity . Citrus fruits, pineapple and passion fruit tones contribute to the aroma. In blending with the variety Rotgipfler the Zierfandler produces under the name Spätrot-Rotgipfler an aromatic, full-bodied and with good quality and durable white wine . The Spätrot-Rotgipfler, like the Neuburger , was also popular internationally as “Gumpoldskirchner” until the 1970s, when it lost market value due to poor quality. Since the 2000s, these wines have experienced a renaissance and an increase in quality.

distribution

In 2015, the Zierfandler acreage in Austria was around 82 hectares, which is 0.19% of the total Austrian acreage. The majority of the cultivation area is in Lower Austria in the thermal region (76 ha).
