List of grape varieties

The Rote Veltliner is an old white wine variety that places high demands on the location. It is very sensitive to fungal diseases , winter and spring frosts. The variety is extremely productive (mass carrier). If the yield is not regulated, the wines turn out thin and expressionless. On the other hand, the Rote Veltliner is a rarity with appropriate viticulture care and vinification .

Franz Hietl (1898–1980) was a wine maker in Engabrunn in the Ried Gallenberg in Walkersdorf am Kamp. In 1916 he saw that, despite the bad flowering weather, a variety of Veltliner varieties had one vine - unlike all the others - with a cluster of grapes. He then began the tedious work of grapevine selection, sought contact with Austrian grapevine breeding in Klosterneuburg and was able to start breeding clones with scientific support. The Roter Veltliner variety was also known as "Hietl-Roter". The Mantlerhof winery in Gedersdorf near Krems also tried to spread the variety with its own selections.

origin

The origin from Austria or Italy is still unclear. The similar looking grape varieties (Valtelin) investigated in Italy have no genetic reference to the Roten Veltliner in Austria, so Austria is a possible country of origin.

Descent and kinship

The origin of the variety is unclear. It is known, however, that the Rote Veltliner is the root variety of the Veltliner group. It occurs in numerous varieties (Weißroter, Brauner Veltliner, Silberweißer Veltliner, Gelbling). The variety was a natural cross partner for the varieties Neuburger , Zierfandler and Rotgipfler .

The Rote Veltliner is not related to the Grüner Veltliner .

Ampelographic features

The shoot tip is hairy white wool with a reddish tinge. The leaf is large, five-lobed and deeply indented. The main nerves on the upper side of the leaf are colored red up to the first branch. The leaf blade is not waffled and slightly blistered. Pedunculate bay open with a V- or clamp-shaped base and not bounded by nerves. Underside of the leaf moderately hairy. The grape is large, shouldered and very dense. Berries are green-yellow to flesh-red in color and have a thick berry skin. The pulp is uncolored and has a neutral taste. The berries ripen very unevenly. The berry color is strongly dependent on the amount of sunlight.

The shoots are strong.

Maturity: late to mid-October

Yield

The yield is high to very high, but very uncertain because of the high flowering, winter and late frosts and susceptibility to botrytis.

Expectations

The variety needs early and warm locations. Fertile loam and loess soils are best. Deep locations are unsuitable because of the high sensitivity to winter frost. Compared to the Grüner Veltliner (susceptible to chlorosis), the Rote Veltliner tolerates clay and lime-rich soils better (more chlorose-resistant).

properties

The variety has some very unfavorable characteristics. These are also one of the reasons that the variety does not spread further.

The Rote Veltliner is very sensitive to blossoms, winter frost and late frost. The grapes are very susceptible to botrytis (dense grapes), downy mildew and red distiller. The shoots are very strong. This property can have an unfavorable effect on a very vigorous site - poor wood ripeness and thus increased risk of winter frost.

Wine

The variety is a mass carrier and usually delivers extremely high yields with correspondingly lower wine quality (thin, expressionless). Wines rich in extracts with fine flowers and good shelf life can only be obtained in suitable locations and with appropriate yield regulation. When young, the wines are spicy, later almond-like. These can be stored well and have a strong acidity.

distribution

Measured against the total wine-growing area in Austria, its share is low at 197 ha (as of 2015). The variety can be found above all on the Wagram , Kamptal and Kremstal , and occasionally in the Weinviertel and Vienna .

In 2010 there was still 5 hectares in Hungary .
