The Lothianbridge Viaduct , also Newbattle Viaduct , South Esk Viaduct or Dalhousie Viaduct , is a railway bridge in the Scottish Council Area Midlothian on the Borders Railway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in Monument Category B. It is not to be confused with the Lothian Bridge at Pathhead .

history

A previous structure existed at the same location. The railway viaduct was built in 1831 and was known as the Newbattle Viaduct or South Esk Viaduct . It was a cast iron bridge that spanned the South Esk with 22 arches. The Marquess of Lothian paid for the construction costs of £ 21,000, who promised better rail links to his coal mines. With the expansion of the railway line to the first section of the later Waverley Line , the viaduct was torn down and replaced by today's Lothianbridge Viaduct.

The bridge was completed in 1847. John Miller is responsible for the design . With the closure of the entire line on January 6, 1969, the viaduct became obsolete . The rails have since been removed. For the reconstruction of the Waverley Route as Borders Railway between Edinburgh and Tweedbank , which opened on September 6, 2015, the bridge was renovated and prepared for rail traffic again. Rails have been on the Lothianbridge Viaduct again since October 2014.

description

The Lothianbridge Viaduct spans the South Esk between the towns of Bonnyrigg and Newtongrange directly south of the A7 . The masonry viaduct crosses the river with 23 round arches. These have clear widths between 11.6 m and 13.4 m and are lined with brick . The clear height is about 24 m. The sandstone masonry is decorated with simple cornices along the pillars . The A7 runs through the easternmost arch. It is the only one that does not run perpendicular to the bridge, but at an angle.
