Newtongrange is a small town in the Midlothian Council Area, Scotland . It is five kilometers south of Dalkeith and twelve kilometers southeast of central Edinburgh on the east bank of the South Esk .

history

Located in the most important coalfield in Scotland, Newtongrange was built in the 1830s as a planned settlement for miners by the Marquess of Lothian . In 1861 787 people lived there. By 1881 the population had risen to 1,010. After the Lothian Coal Company was founded by Schomberg Kerr, 9th Marquess of Lothian and the coal baron Archibald Hood in the 1890s, the Lady Victoria Colliery was established in Newtongrange and began operations in 1895. As a result, Newtongrange developed into the largest mining settlement in Scotland. The plant reached its peak in 1953 when 1765 people were employed there. Two years earlier, Newtongrange had 5685 inhabitants. In 1981 the mine closed. After the Heritage Lottery Fund provided the financial means to restore the facility in 2007, it became the Scottish Mining Museum . Together with Mayfield , which is directly to the east , 13,331 people lived in the two small towns in 2001.

traffic

Newtongrange is just off the A7 ( Edinburgh - Carlisle ). On the Waverley Line , Newtongrange was given its own station, but this was closed when the line was closed in the 1960s. Between Newtongrange and Bonnyrigg , the line crossed the South Esk on the imposing Lothianbridge Viaduct . As part of the reconstruction of the line as a Borders Railway from 2012 to 2015, Newtongrange was once again given its own station, from which trains run to Edinburgh every 30 minutes on weekdays. With the Edinburgh Airport is an international airport located about 20 km north-west.
