The Tuolumne County is a county in the state of California of the United States . The county seat is Sonora , the only city in the county.
geography
The county has an area of 5891 square kilometers, of which 101 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a counterclockwise direction by the following counties: Alpine County , Calaveras County , Stanislaus County , Mariposa County , Madera County, and Mono County . The northern half of Yosemite National Park is in the eastern part of the county.
history
Tuolumne County was one of the founding counties of California in 1850. Parts of it were ceded to Stanislaus County in 1854 and Alpine County in 1864.
The name Tuolumne is of Indian origin and has different meanings, such as many stone houses or the land of the mountain lions . Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo wrote in his report on the first legislature of California that the word "is a falsification of the Indian word talmalamne ", translated as "group of stone wigwams " or "people who live in stone houses".
Tuolumne County has two National Historic Landmarks , Columbia State Historic Park and Parsons Memorial Lodge . A total of 35 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Tuolumne County had 54,501 people. There were 21,004 households and 14,240 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.45% White, 2.10% African American, 1.82% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, and 2.89% other races Groups; 2.84% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 8.16% of the population.
Of the 21,004 households, 26.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.40% were married couples living together, 9.60% were single mothers. 32.20% were not families. 26.00% were single households and 11.70% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.82 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.70% of residents under the age of 18, 7.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 27.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 18.50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 111.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 112.20 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 38,725 , and the median income for a family was $ 44,327. Males had a median income of $ 35,373 versus $ 25,805 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,015. 11.40% percent of the population and 8.10% of families are below the poverty line. 16.20% of these were under 18 years of age and 4.00% were 65 years of age or older.
