Santa Barbara County's population was 399,347 as of the 2000 census . There were 136,622 households and 89,487 families. The population density was 56 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.72% White, 2.30% African American, 1.20% Native American, 4.09% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, and 15.20% other races Groups; 4.31% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 34.22% of the population.
Of the 136,622 households, 32.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.40% were married couples living together, 10.00% were single mothers. 34.50% were not families. 24.30% are single households and 9.40% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.33 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.90% residents under 18 years of age, 13.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 12.70% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 100.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 46,677 , and the median income for a family is $ 54,042. Males had a median income of $ 37,997 versus $ 29,593 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,059. 14.30% percent of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. 16.30% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.20% were 65 years of age or older.
