Montecito is a city in Santa Barbara County in the US state of California .
The city has 8965 inhabitants on an area of 24.2 km². Montecito is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States . It is located in the east of Santa Barbara , in a coastal plain south of the Santa Ynez Mountains . In the south, along the coast, there is a railway line from east to west as well as the coastal road El Camino Real , US Highway 101 . There are sandy beaches and tourist facilities on the coast. In the north the Montecito Peak rises at 981 meters.
history
The Chumash Indians used to live in the area. The Spaniards established bases further west in the Presidio and St. Barbara in the 18th century . In the 19th century, highwaymen who attacked transports on the coastal road lived here. From the late 1860s, Italian settlers began to settle.
At the end of the 19th century, wealthy people in search of relaxation from the east of America discovered the coast. The Montecito Hot Springs Hotel was built on a large spring - it burned down in 1920. The architect George Washington Smith became known for his residences built around Montecito, which took up the Spanish colonial style .
