history
Before European immigrants settled in the region, Indians from the Chumash tribe settled here . After California became a US state in 1850, the area around present-day Santa Maria began to become attractive to farmers because of its fertile soil. After the establishment of the place, the new settlement was first named Grangerville, then Central City, before the current name was finally adopted in 1885 to avoid confusion with Central City in Colorado . Santa Maria was chosen because the settler Juan Pacifico Ontiveros had named his property 25 years earlier. On January 31, 2005, the place had gained worldwide fame because of the trial against Michael Jackson .
