Tulare County is a county in the Central Valley of the state of California in the United States . The county seat is Visalia .
geography
The county is located slightly southeast of the geographic center of California and is bordered clockwise by the counties: Fresno County , Inyo County , Kern County, and Kings County .
history
Tulare County was formed from parts of Mariposa County in 1852. Parts of the county were added to Fresno County in 1856, Kern County in 1866, Inyo County in 1866 and Kings County in 1893.
Comandante Pedro Fages , who was chasing deserters in 1772, discovered a large lake surrounded by marshland. He called this Los Tules . The roots of the county name Tulare are Spanish . Tullin referred reeds or cattails or other Riet .
A total of 34 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
economy
Tulare County is one of the poorest counties in California, although Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are nearby.
The county's agriculture is considered the most productive in the entire United States after Fresno County . It is also one of the most agriculturally productive regions in the world. Milk production plays a special role in this. The annual World Ag Expo , the largest agricultural fair in the world, takes place here in the second week of February.

As of the 2000 census , Tulare County had a population of 368,021. There were 110,385 households and 87,093 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 58.08% White, 1.59% African American, 1.56% Native American, 3.27% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, and 30.79% other races Groups; 4.60% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 50.77% of the population.
Of the 110,385 households, 44.90% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.10% were married couples living together, 14.50% were single mothers. 21.10% were not families. 17.10% were single households and 7.70% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.28 and the average family size was 3.67 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 33.80% residents under 18 years of age, 10.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 18.20% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.80% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 100.00 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,983 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,297. Males had a median income of $ 30,892 versus $ 24,589 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,006. 23.90% percent of the population and 18.80% of families are below the poverty line. 32.60% of these were under 18 years of age and 10.50% were 65 years of age or older.
