Imperial County is a county in the southeast of the US state California . The county seat is El Centro .
Imperial County was formed from eastern San Diego County in 1907 and is the youngest county in California.
history
Imperial County has a National Historic Landmark , the Yuma Crossing and Associated Sites . 10 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .
Imperial County has been particularly hard hit during the 2020 United States COVID-19 pandemic .
geography
The county covers an area of 11,608 square kilometers. Of this, 10,812 square kilometers are land and 795 square kilometers are water. The Colorado River forms the eastern border. The Salton Sea , the Algodones Dunes and the Chocolate Mountains are also in the county . It is bordered by Mexico to the south, Arizona to the east, Riverside County to the north, and San Diego County to the west .

According to the 2000 census , Imperial County's population was 142,361. There were 39,384 households and 31,467 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. By race , the population was composed of 49.37% White, 3.95% African American, 1.87% Native American, 1.99% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 39.08% other Races; 3.65% were descended from two or more races. 72.22% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 39,384 households, 46.70% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.70% were married couples living together, 17.10% were single mothers. 20.10% were not families. 17.10% were single households and 8.10% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.33 and the average family size was 3.77 people.
For the county as a whole, the population was 31.40% below the age of 18, 9.90% between 18 and 24, 30.40% between 25 and 44, and 18.20% between 45 and 64 10.00% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 109.30 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 111.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,870 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,226. Males had a median income of $ 32,775 versus $ 23,974 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,239. 22.60% percent of the population and 19.40% of families are below the poverty line. 28.70% of these were under 18 years of age and 13.60% were 65 years of age or older.
towns and places
The place Slab City , which consists exclusively of caravans, is a specialty . It is near Niland. Slab City has no running water, no electricity and no shopping facilities. Several thousand people live here in winter, but only a few in summer due to the heat.
