Slab City
Slab City (German for "Platten-Stadt") is a wild camping site in the Colorado Desert in Imperial County in California , 250 kilometers northeast of San Diego .
In winter it consists of a few thousand mobile homes, in summer, however, most campers are drawn to cooler regions in the north. The name is derived from the concrete slabs of an abandoned military base from the Second World War .
The next place is Niland , which is about five kilometers southwest. In Slab City itself there is no shopping, no electricity and no water connection.
On his journey through the USA, Christopher McCandless , who later starved in Alaska , came to Slab City in December 1991, where he stayed for some time.
Nearby is the Salvation Mountain Land Art installation .
