Salvation Mountain

The Salvation Mountain is a colorful art installation on a small hill in the north of Calipatria ( California ), near Slab City .

purpose

Salvation Mountain is made from tons of clay, straw, and paint. Leonard Knight (born November 1, 1931 in Vermont , † February 10, 2014 in El Cajon ) made it to convey the message "God loves everyone". Knight deliberately refrained from donating money so that his work could not be instrumentalized by certain groups. He lived without running water or electricity in a 1930s Chevrolet truck he designed . He could only be reached by post.

history

Since he started sculpting a mountain in 1984, there have also been a few painted and decorated cars and trucks. In the mid-1990s, the California government tried several times to close Slab City and Salvation Mountain. It could be prevented because Leonard Knight with his work of art was meanwhile known beyond the national borders. The mountain was declared a national cultural asset by Senator Barbara Boxer in 2002.
