Calipatria is a city in the US state of California . It is located in the center of Imperial County about 37 kilometers north of El Centro . According to the 2010 census , there are 7,700 inhabitants. The majority of the urban population is Latinos ; they make up a good three quarters of the population, which is not uncommon in the southernmost areas of California. However, about one-sixth African - Americans are represented above average compared to the whole of California. California State Route 111 , which connects Calipatria with surrounding larger cities and extends to the Mexican border, runs through the village .
Calipatria is 55 m below sea level and is therefore the lowest city in the United States ( Furnace Creek in Death Valley in Inyo County, California is a few meters lower, but is not a city, just a " census-designated place ") and the entire western one Hemisphere . The place is also known for a 56 meter high flagpole erected in 1958 , which was at times the tallest in the United States. The Calipatria State Prison , a prison with more than 2000 inmates, is also better known.
The place was founded in 1914 as Date City and registered as city in 1919 under its current name .
