Calexico is a city in Imperial County in the US state of California with 38,572 inhabitants (as of 2010). The urban area covers an area of 16.1 square kilometers and is located on California State Routes 98 and 111 .
Overview
The name of the city is a suitcase word from Cal ifornia and M exico , as is the name of the city of Mexicali , which is on the other side of the border between the United States and Mexico and is the capital of the state of Baja California .
Calexico was founded in 1900 and officially registered as a municipality in 1907.
The city has a small airport called Calexico International Airport ( IATA code CXL), which mainly handles border traffic.
Demographics
The 2010 census found a population of 38,572. Thus, an increase of over 11,000 people could be determined within ten years. In 2000, according to the census at that time , a good 27,100 people still lived in Calexico. The proportion of Latinos in the total population remained constant, as they make up almost the entire population of the city. In 2010 their share was around 96 percent, which means that the city has a significantly higher percentage of this population group than the state of California. Other ethnic groups are minorities. This includes whites of European descent as well as Afro-Americans and Asians. According to the census, there were 89.6 men for every 100 women. The city's population was distributed over 10,116 households, while the average household is around four people. The median age was 31.8 years.
