Salton City is a census-designated place in Imperial County in the southern US state of California .
The place is near the Salton Sea on the border with the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park . According to the 2010 census , 3763 people live there on an area of 56 km². The population has more than tripled since 2000 , with 978 people living in Salton City at the time of the 2000 census . The place is on California State Route 86 .
