Allen Strange

Allen Strange (born June 26, 1943 in Calexico / California , † February 20, 2008 on Bainbridge Island / Washington ) was an American composer, music theorist and musician.

Strange studied composition with Donal Michalsky at California State University, Fullerton , until 1967 . He continued his education from 1967–68 and 1970–71 at the University of California, San Diego , where he studied composition and electronic media with Robert Erickson , Harry Partch , Kenneth Gaburo and Pauline Oliveros .

He received two scholarships from the San Jose State University Foundation for research in the field of electroacoustic music, and in 1970 he became Professor of Music and Director of the Electronic Music Studio at San José State University . In 1972 he published Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls , a standard work on analog electronic music. In 1974, Programming and Meta-Programming the Electro-Organism , a manual for Don Buchla's portable synthesizer Music Easel, was published . Strange co-founded two electronic music performance groups - Biome (1967-72) and Electronic Weasel Ensemble (1974, with Buchla).

In addition to works for live electronic instruments and for live and recorded electronics with acoustic instruments and voices, Strange composed music for multimedia theater pieces, including films, slides and light effects. Several pieces were created in collaboration with the playwright Robert Jenkins , including Jack and the Beanstalk (1979) and the audio drama The Ghost Hour (1981). With his wife, violinist Patricia Strange , he published the book The Contemporary Violin: Extended Performance Techniques in 2001 .

In memory of him, the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) has presented the Allen Strange Memorial Award annually since 2008 .
