The California State University, Fullerton (also CSUF , Fullerton State or Cal State Fullerton called) is a state university in Fullerton , Orange County in the US state of California . With 35,970 students, it is one of the largest universities in the California State University system.

history

The CSUF was founded in 1957 as Orange County State College and began teaching in September 1959 with 452 students at the time. In 1962 the name was changed to Orange State College and in 1964 to California State College at Fullerton . In June 1972 it was finally given its current name.

The university has grown rapidly since the turn of the millennium. As a result, the CSU Fullerton had the highest number of matriculations of all 23 locations of the CSU with 37,130 students during the fall semester.

Sports

The CSUF Titans

The CSUF sports teams are called the Titans . The university is a member of the Big West Conference . The Titan Gymnasium , where the volleyball and basketball teams play, is located on the university grounds .

The choice of the elephant, known as Tuffy the Titan , as the college's mascot dates back to the early 1960s when the campus hosted the first college elephant race in human history . The event drew 10,000 spectators, 15 pachyderms, a telegram from Richard M. Nixon and worldwide coverage.

CSUF alumni include an astronaut who has twice traveled into space, the new spokesperson for the California Assembly, other politicians and Oscar-winning directors, actors, producers and cinematographers, award-winning journalists, writers and screenwriters, nationally recognized teachers, presidents and CEOs of leading companies, international opera stars, musicians and Broadway stars as well as professional athletes, Olympians, doctors, scientists, researchers and social activists.

Some of the well-known CSUF alumni include Gwen Stefani , Tracy Caldwell Dyson , Jack O'Connell , Ed Royce , Kevin Costner , Lou Correa , Kim Krizan , Marc Cherry , Ashley Force Hood, Michele Ruiz, Kirsten Vangsness , Tony Reagins, Gabe Kapler, and Matt Chapman .

The number of Titan alumni is more than 210,000.
