The Loyola Marymount University ( LMU ) is a private university in Los Angeles in the US state of California . It is supported by three religious orders : the Jesuits , the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM) and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange (CSJ) . It is one of 28 member universities of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities . There are currently 9,484 students enrolled.

history

Loyola Marymount University was created in 1973 from the merger of Marymount College and Loyola University. The origin of Loyola University goes back to St. Vincent's College , which the Vincentines founded in 1865 and taken over by the Jesuits in 1911. Marymount College was founded by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary in 1933 as Marymount Junior College (women only). The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange had been co- sponsors of the college since 1968 .
