Ad maiorem Dei gloriam

Ad maiorem Dei gloriam is a Latin phrase (abbr .: AMDG), in German: "For the greater glory of God".

This phrase comes to a passage in the dialogues of Pope Gregory I. back. It is the motto of the Jesuit order . They can also be found as inscriptions on older buildings and as a preface in older literary and musical works.

Even today the phrase is used as a motto in many Italian families. Colloquially, it is sometimes used to justify behavior that is not completely compliant with the rules for the purpose of achieving higher-level goals.
