Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. (born October 2, 1937 in Shreveport , Louisiana , † March 29, 2005 in Los Angeles ) was an American lawyer who defended OJ Simpson , Tupac Shakur and Michael Jackson , among others .

Life

He was born in Louisiana in 1937, the son of an insurance agent. In 1949 the family moved to Los Angeles . In 1955 he graduated from Los Angeles High School. In 1959 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of California at Los Angeles. He studied law at Loyola Marymount University School of Law and graduated in 1962.

According to his own statements, Thurgood Marshall and his triumph in the Brown v. Board of Education had been the inspiration for Cochran and encouraged him to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1963. In the 1970s, he made a name for himself as a civil rights attorney. He later defended celebrities such as Tupac Shakur , Snoop Dogg , Todd Bridges , Marion Jones , Michael Jackson (1993) and P. Diddy (1999). The most famous case he had as principal defender OJ Simpsons . He had been arrested in 1994 and accused his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and their friend Ronald Goldman murdered to have. From Cochran comes the saying: " If it doesn't fit, you must acquit " (Engl .; "If it (the glove) does not fit, you [him (Simpson)] have to acquit "). The criminal trial ended with the Simpsons acquittal. Cochran's rhyme is an example of the rhyme-as-reason effect .

He had guest appearances in Alone Among Neighbors , All Under One Roof , The Howard Stern Show , Arli $$ , CHiPs , It's Showtime , JAG and Showtime . In the series Seinfeld , the lawyer Jackie Chiles, played by the actor Phil Morris , appears several times , who is a parody of Cochran. In the film parody High School High , a parking space reserved for him is shown, as evidence of how tough things are at the school in question. In the docudrama The People v. OJ Simpson. 2016 American Crime Story , which delves into Cochran's defense strategy, was played by Courtney B. Vance , who received an Emmy for his portrayal.

Cochran died in 2005 at the age of 67 of an inoperable brain tumor . NBC described him in an obituary as Defense Superstar ( [criminal] defender superstar ). The Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Middle School (formerly Mt. Vernon Jr. High) in Los Angeles is named after him, as is the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Brain Tumor Center within the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
