Shreveport is the third largest city and core city of the third largest metropolitan area in the US state Louisiana . It ranks 99th among the 100 largest cities in the USA . The city is the administrative seat of the Caddo Parish , but extends to a smaller extent into the Bossier Parish . Bossier City is on the opposite bank of the Red River . In 2010 Shreveport had 199,311 residents, the number of which increased to 201,867 by the 2012 estimate.

Shreveport is the economic and cultural center of Ark-La-Tex - this is the name given to the area where Arkansas , Louisiana and Texas meet. The city is also called the Gateway to East Texas .

First white settlement

The city was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company with the aim of building a city at the point where the Red River and Texas Trail meet. The Red River was first navigated and made navigable by Captain Henry Miller Shreve , commander of the United States Army Corps of Engineers . A 290 km long, natural blockade ( The Great Raft ) had previously prevented the passage. Shreve Town got its name in honor of Captain Shreve.

The urban area of Shreve Town originally comprised a section that the Shreve Town Company bought from the local Caddo Indians in 1835. In 1838 the Caddo Parish was separated from the large Natchitoches Parish and Shreve Town became the administrative center. On March 20, 1839, the city was renamed "Shreveport". Originally, the place consisted of 64 street blocks.

Shreveport soon became a trading center, mostly for cotton and agricultural products. Shreveport also had a slave market, although the slave trade was not as widespread as in other parts of Louisiana. Slaves and freelancers worked on the river steamers that sailed the Red River and as laborers loading and unloading ships. Around 1860 there were 2,200 free people and 1,300 slaves in the city.

During the American Civil War Shreveport was a stronghold of the southern states and in collaboration with Marshall, Texas , the headquarters of the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederate Army after the Union Baton Rouge and Opelousas, Louisiana had conquered. Fort Albert Sidney Johnston was built to fortify the city.

Even after Robert E. Lee's surrender in April 1865, fighting in the west continued. The Trans-Mississippi Department was the last Confederate command to surrender.

The Red River remained navigable until 1914, when the transport of people and goods shifted to rail. The river silted up again and remained impassable until the 1990s. In the meantime, the port of Shreveport-Bossier City is developing again into a center of shipping.

Gambling is legal in Louisiana. Therefore, in the mid-1990s, a few casinos settled on river boats along the Red River . In this way, the city center and the riverside areas were brought back to life. Many streets in the city center have been redesigned through the “Streetscape” project. Neon lights were installed on the "Texas Street Bridge"; originally, a green laser beam was also planned. However, this plan was rejected again.

climate

The climate in Shreveport is shaped by the subtropical conditions in the south and the continental climate of the Great Plains and the Midwest. In the year it rains an average of almost 1290 mm. Severe storms with rain, hail and tornadoes usually occur in spring. The winter months are mild. There are an average of 39 days of frost a year. The summer months are very warm and humid. On 32 days a year more than 35 ° C is reached with a relative humidity of more than 90%.

economy

Downtown Shreveport

Shreveport was an important location for the American oil industry. In the 1980s the oil and gas industry suffered from an economic recession and many companies cut jobs or were forced out of the market. Shreveport suffered greatly from this decline and many residents left the city. Today the city is home to many casinos. Bossier City has a horse racing track, the Louisiana Downs.

In May 2005 the Louisiana Boardwalk, a 51,000 m² shopping and entertainment complex, was inaugurated. It was built across the Red River and includes boutiques, restaurants, a cinema and a bowling alley. There is a downtown convention center and a twelve-story hotel that was completed in 2006.

Shreveport was barely hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2006 because the city is 300 km inland. The city therefore took in many refugees from southern Louisiana. It has been speculated that some businesses and residents will be relocating to Shreveport from hard-hit New Orleans .

The largest employer is the military. Here is the Barksdale Air Force Base represented with about 7,000 military personnel.

In addition, the German steel tube manufacturer Benteler Steel / Tube has had a tube plant in Shreveport since 2014 .

General Motors had a large plant in Shreveport. The Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon were built here.

Sports

Shreveport and Bossier City are home to an arena football team, the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings, and an ice hockey team, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs .

In the mid-1990s there was a professional football team in Shreveport - the Shreveport Pirates . They played in the Canadian Football League and were a kind of franchise for the Ottawa Rough Riders . They played their first season in 1995. Just one year later, the team was disbanded.

media

There is a wide variety of print media in Shreveport. The Shreveport Times provides news to Shreveport-Bossier and the Ark-La-Tex area. Smaller, non-daily newspapers are the Shreveport Sun and the Caddo Citizen. The Bombardier is a weekly newspaper from Barksdale Air Force Base .

In addition, there are various radio and television stations in Shreveport that supply the metropolitan area.

Highways and streets

Interstate 20 was built at Shreveport in the 1960s . It connects west to Dallas and east to Jackson, Mississippi . Coming from the south, Interstate 49 meets the ring road system around Shreveport.

The system of highways is reminiscent of cities like Houston and Dallas. An outer ring road, Interstate 220 to the north and an inner ring road to the south, Louisiana State Route 3132 , together form a half-circle around downtown Shreveport.

Airports

There are two airports in Shreveport. The larger one is Shreveport Regional Airport (SHV / KSHV). The second airport is called Shreveport Downtown Airport (DTN / KDTN). This airport is used for aviation and as an auxiliary airport and has existed since 1931.
