Red River (blue) and its catchment area (yellow). There is a small mistake on the map: Arkansas and northern Louisiana do not have a catchment area that extends all the way to the Mississippi.

The Red River is one with headwaters around 2,075 km long river (as Red River 1966 km ) in the center and south of the United States and empties into the Atchafalaya River .

It is one of several rivers in the world that are named Red River , and one of two of that name in the United States, where it is sometimes called the Red River of the South .

River course

The Red River arises in northwest Texas near the border with New Mexico in the Great Plains from the confluence of four source rivers: Prairie Dog Town Fork as well as Elm Fork , Salt Fork and North Fork . In very rainy years, the river is even fed by streams that come from eastern New Mexico, for example Frio Creek , which rises northwest of Clovis , flows east and flows into the Prairie Dog Town Fork ; with it, the Red River is up to 2188 km long.

The Prairie Dog Town Fork , the main source of the Red River, is created by the union of the shorter Palo Duro Creek and the longer Tierra Blanca Creek . This arises east of the border with New Mexico only about 47 km (as the crow flies ) west of Hereford from the source streams of the small Buffalo reservoir , which has been located in the National Wildlife Refuge of the same name since 1939 due to the construction of the Umbarger Dam . From there it flows in an easterly direction to unite at Canyon with Palo Duro Creek to form the Prairie Dog Town Fork . This flows within the Palo Duro Canyon (in the state park of the same name ) to the east and later forms - already as the Red River - the border between Texas and Oklahoma ; Elm Fork , Salt Fork and North Fork flow into this section . After flowing through the Texoma reservoir , it forms the border between Texas and Arkansas , to which both banks belong in parts. Then the Red River reaches the border between Arkansas and Louisiana and soon after Shreveport , the largest city on the river. The Red River runs through Louisiana mostly in a south-easterly direction.

About 110 km northeast of Baton Rouge , the Red River flows with an average water flow of 1590 m³ / s into the 270 km long Atchafalaya River, the longest estuary of the Mississippi with an average discharge of 4730 m³ / s. Even if the Red River is hydrologically part of the Mississippi catchment area, it is still listed as an independent river.

additional

The name Red River is derived from the red clay particles that come from the old sedimentary rocks of its catchment area and are in suspension in the water of the river .

The river was dammed, among other things, by the Denison Dam, built in 1943 about 113 km north of Dallas , to form the 360 km² large Texoma reservoir . The Red River is navigable below this barrier structure . Further reservoirs for flood protection are located at its tributaries, e.g. B. Lake Kemp on the Big Wichita River in Baylor County , Texas.

For a time it was a border river after the Adams-Onís Treaty between Mexico and the USA.
