The county is located in northern Texas, about 60 km from the Oklahoma border and has an area of ​​2334 square kilometers, of which 78 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wilbarger County , Wichita County , Archer County , Young County , Throckmorton County , Haskell County , Knox County, and Foard Counties .

Baylor County was formed from parts of Fannin County on February 1, 1858 , and the administrative organization was completed on April 12, 1879. It was named after Henry Weidner Baylor (1818-1854), a field doctor for the Texas Rangers during the Mexican-American War .

As of the 2000 census , Baylor County had 4,093 people in 1,791 households and 1,156 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer.
