The Archer County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Archer City .
geography
The county is located in north Texas (but not Panhandle Texas ) about 50 km from the Oklahoma border. It has an area of 2,398 square kilometers, of which 42 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the following counties: Wichita (north), Clay (east), Jack (southeast), Young (south), Throckmorton (southwest), Baylor (west), and Wilbarger (northwest). The center of the county is 35 ° 30 ′ N, 98 ° 30 ′ W.
history
Archer County was formed from parts of Clay County on January 22, 1858 and the administrative organization ended on July 27, 1880. It was named after Branch Turner Archer (1790-1856), who was speaker and Secretary of War in the Republic of Texas . Before the arrival of white settlers, Apaches, Wichitas, Tawakonis, Kichais, Caddoes, Comanches and later Kiowas lived here.

As of the 2000 census , Archer County had 8,854 people in 3,345 households and 2,515 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.54 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 0.62 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.32 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.87 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,345 households, 37.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 65.0 percent were married couples living together, 7.2 percent were single mothers and 24.8 percent were non-families. 21.9 percent were single households and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.08 people.
28.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 96.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,514 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,984. Males had a median income of $ 31,386 versus $ 22,119 for females. The per capita income was 19,300. 9.0 percent of the population, 6.8 percent of the families lived below the poverty line.
