The Erath County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Stephenville . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located approximately 70 km northeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2,823 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It is bordered, clockwise, by the following counties: Palo Pinto County , Hood County , Somervell County , Bosque County , Hamilton County , Comanche County, and Eastland County .

history

Erath County was formed on January 25, 1856 from parts of Bosque County and Coryell County and the administrative organization was completed on August 4 of the same year. It was named after George Bernard Erath , who migrated from Austria to Texas in 1833 and took part in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 . He then served in the State Legislature of the Republic of Texas and later of Texas for several years .

Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 18, 2019).

According to the 2000 census , Erath County had 33,001 people in 12,568 households and 8,106 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.72 percent white, 0.82 percent African American, 0.66 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 6.78 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.63 percent were descended from two or more races. 15.03 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 97.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 95.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,708 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,491. Males had a median income of $ 27,972 versus $ 20,765 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,655. 10.3 percent of families and 16.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
