The Hays County is a county in the state of Texas in the United States . The county seat is in San Marcos .

The county is located about 100 km southeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​1761 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Travis County , Caldwell County , Guadalupe County , Comal County, and Blanco Counties .

history

Hays County was formed in 1848 from parts of Travis County. It was named after John Coffee Hays (1817-1883), an officer in the Texas Rangers who served in the Mexican-American as a colonel under Zachary Taylor and fought, among other things, in the Battle of Monterrey . He was then sheriff in San Francisco , co-founder of Oakland and in 1859 California's chief surveyor .

According to the 2000 census , Hays County had 97,589 people in 33,410 households and 22,150 families. The population density was 56 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 78.92 percent white, 3.68 percent African American, 0.69 percent Native American, 0.79 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 13.36 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 29.57 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 33,410 households, 34.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 53.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 33.7 percent were non-families. 21.0 percent were single households and 4.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.21 people.

24.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 20.5 percent between 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44, 19.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 7.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 101.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 99.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 45,006 , and the median income for a family is $ 56,287. Males had a median income of $ 35,209 versus $ 27,334 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,931. 6.4 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
