The Floyd County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Floydada .

geography

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas and is about 90 km to the northeast from Oklahoma and about 120 km to the west from New Mexico . It has an area of ​​2571 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Briscoe County , Motley County , Crosby County , Hale County, and Swisher County .

history

Floyd County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County and Young County. The administrative organization was completed on May 28, 1890. It was named after Dolphin Ward Floyd (1804-1836), who fell on the side of the Texan independence fighters at the Battle of Alamo .

Three buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 21, 2019).

According to the 2000 census , Floyd County had 7,771 people in 2,730 households and 2,110 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.16 percent white, 3.38 percent African American, 0.76 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 19.66 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.81 percent were descended from two or more races. 45.93 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,730 households, 39.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 63.9 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers and 22.7 percent were non-families. 21.3 percent were single households and 12.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.26 people.

31.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.4 percent between 18 and 24, 24.4 percent between 25 and 44, 20.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 89.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 26,851 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,123. Males had a median income of $ 25,487 versus $ 18,929 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,206. 19.5 percent of families and 21.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
