The Garza County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Post .
geography
The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas, about 150 km to the northeast from Oklahoma and about 120 km to the west from New Mexico . It has an area of 2321 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Crosby County , Kent County , Scurry County , Borden County, and Lynn County .
history
Garza County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after the de la Garza family from San Antonio , who were one of the wealthiest in the region. José Antonio de la Garza minted the first coins in Texas in 1818, on the reverse of which a single star (English: “Lone Star”) was depicted. Possibly this was decisive for the later shape of the Texan flag .
Six structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of May 29, 2019, including the Garza County Courthouse .

As of the 2000 census , Garza County had 4,872 people in 1,663 households and 1,217 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.70 percent white, 4.80 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 17.10 percent from other ethnic groups; 3.00 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.00 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,663 households, 36.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers and 26.8 percent were non-families. 23.8 percent were single households and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.15 people.
28.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 112.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 111.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,206 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,173. Males had a median income of $ 26,604 versus $ 18,105 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,704. 17.5 percent of families and 22.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
