The county is northeast of the geographic center of Texas on the south bank of the Sulfur River and borders Arkansas and Louisiana to the east . It has an area of ​​2487 square kilometers, of which 60 square kilometers are water. Cass County is bordered by the following neighboring counties and parishes:

Cass County was formed from parts of Bowie County on April 25, 1846, and the administrative organization was completed on July 13 of the same year. It was named after Lewis Cass (1782–1866), a US Senator from Michigan who advocated the admission of Texas to the United States. In 1861 the county was renamed Davis County after Jefferson Davis , President of the Confederate States of America . After the Reconstruction phase after the Civil War , it was renamed Cass County again on May 16, 1871.

The Mathews-Powell House is one of three entries for the county in the NRHP.

Three buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of October 18, 2018).

Demographic data

As of the 2010 census , Cass County had 30,464 people in 12,313 households. The population density was 12.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.0 percent white, 17.4 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 3.5 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. Statistically, 2.36 people lived in each of the 12,313 households.

22.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 57.7 percent were between 18 and 64 and 19.4 percent were 65 years or older. 51.7 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was 37,065  USD . The per capita income was $ 20,456. 19.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
