The county is located near the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2,948 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Mills County , Lampasas County , Burnet County , Llano County , Mason County , McCulloch County, and Brown County .

history

San Saba County was formed in 1856 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after the San Saba River .

As of the 2000 census , San Saba County had 6,186 people in 2,289 households and 1,616 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.50 percent white, 2.73 percent African American, 1.07 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian and 10.52 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.07 percent were descended from two or more races. 21.55 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,289 households, 29.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers and 29.4 percent were non-families. 27.5 percent were single households and 15.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97 people.

27.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 20.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 20.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 107.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 97.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,104 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,255. Males had a median income of $ 25,334 versus $ 20,111 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,309. 13.3 percent of families and 16.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
