The Palo Pinto County is a county in the state of Texas in the United States . The county seat is in Palo Pinto .

geography

The county is located about 100 km northeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2552 square kilometers, of which 84 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jack County , Parker County , Hood County , Erath County , Stephens County, and Young County .

history

Palo Pinto County was formed on August 27, 1856 from parts of Bosque County and Navarro County . The administrative organization was completed on May 13 of the following year. It was named after the Palo Pinto Creek , whose Spanish name Palo Pinto means "painted stick". This could refer to the mesquite trees on this stream, which leave such an impression when overgrown with moss.

As of the 2000 census , Palo Pinto County had 27,026 people in 10,594 households and 7,447 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.19 percent white, 2.32 percent African American, 0.67 percent Native American, 0.53 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 6.56 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 13.57 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 10,594 households, 30.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 55.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.4 percent were single mothers and 29.7 percent were non-families. 26.2 percent were single households and 12.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.02 people.

26.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 25.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males, and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.3 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,203 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,977. Males had a median income of $ 28,526 versus $ 18,834 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,454. 12.3 percent of families and 15.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
