The Starr County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Rio Grande City .

The county is located in southern Texas, borders Mexico in the southwest and is approximately 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the east. It has an area of 3184 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jim Hogg Counties , Brooks Counties , Hidalgo Counties , and Zapata Counties .
history
Starr County was formed in 1848 from parts of Nueces County. It was named after James Harper Starr , a Treasury Secretary for the Republic of Texas.

According to the 2000 census , Starr County had 53,597 people in 14,410 households and 12,666 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.92 percent white, 0.15 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 9.91 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.46 percent were descended from two or more races. 97.54 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 14,410 households, 54.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 66.5 percent were married couples living together, 17.4 percent were single mothers, and 12.1 percent were non-families. 11.3 percent were single households and 5.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 3.69 and the average family size was 4.01 people.
37.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44, 16.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 8.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 88.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 16,504 , and the median income for a family is $ 17,556. Males had a median income of $ 17,398 versus $ 13,533 for females. The per capita income was $ 7,069. 47.4 percent of families and 50.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
