The Polk County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Livingston .

The county is located in east Texas, about 80 km from the border with Louisiana and has an area of 2,874 square kilometers, of which 136 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Angelina County , Tyler County , Hardin County , Liberty County , San Jacinto County, and Trinity County .

history

Polk County was formed as the original county in 1836. It was named after James Knox Polk , the 11th President of the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Polk County had 41,133 people in 15,119 households and 10,915 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.64 percent white, 13.17 percent African American, 1.74 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.74 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.32 percent were descended from two or more races. 9.39 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 15,119 households, 28.8 percent had children or young people living with them. 57.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers and 27.8 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent were single households and 12.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.95 people.

22.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 26.8 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 108.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 109.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,495 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,957. Males had a median income of $ 30,823 versus $ 21,065 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,834. 13.3 percent of families and 17.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
