The Rusk County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Henderson . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 30 km from the Arkansas border and has an area of 2,431 square kilometers, of which 39 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Gregg County , Harrison County , Panola County , Shelby County , Nacogdoches County , Cherokee County, and Smith County .
history
Rusk County was formed in 1843 from parts of Nacogdoches County. It was named after Thomas Jefferson Rusk , a general during the Texas Revolution , statesman for the Republic of Texas, and a senator in the US Senate.

As of the 2000 census , Rusk County had 47,372 people in 17,364 households and 12,727 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.89 percent white, 19.21 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. 8.44 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 17,364 households, 32.5 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers and 26.7 percent were non-families. 24.2 percent were single households and 12.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.05.
24.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 104 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 103.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 32,898 , and the median income for a family was $ 39,185. Males had a median income of $ 30,956 versus $ 19,749 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,674. 10.9 percent of families and 14.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
