The county is located in northwest Texas, in the Texas Panhandle , about 50 km to the west from New Mexico and about 60 km to the north from Oklahoma . It has an area of ​​2388 square kilometers, of which 33 square kilometers is water surface in the form of the Canadian River and the southern part of the Lake Meredith reservoir . The county is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Moore County , Carson County , Randall County, and Oldham County .

According to the 2000 census , Potter County had 113,546 people in 40,760 households and 27,472 families. The population density was 48 inhabitants per square kilometer.
