DeWitt County is a county in the state of Texas in the United States . The county seat is in Cuero .
geography
DeWitt County is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas and is approximately 100 km to the southeast from the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of 2358 km², of which 3 km² are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lavaca County , Victoria County , Goliad County , Karnes County, and Gonzales County .
history
DeWitt County was formed on March 24, 1846 from parts of Goliad County and Gonzales County and Victoria County. The administrative organization was completed on July 13 of the same year. It was named after the officer and veteran of the British-American War Green DeWitt , the founder of one of the first colonies in what was then still Mexican Texas on the Guadalupe River .
economy
Preparations for the exploitation of oil shale deposits (Eagle Ford Shale) have been underway in the county since 2008 . An oil boom like the one to be expected at the beginning of the 20th century is to be expected.

According to the 2000 census , DeWitt County had 20,013 people; 7,207 households and 5,131 families were counted. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.42 percent white, 11.04 percent African American, 0.54 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 10.01 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.75 percent were descended from two or more races. 27.24 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,207 households, 31.0 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 11.8 percent were single mothers, and 28.8 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent were single households and 15.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.04 people.
23.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 105.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 105.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,714 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,513. Males had a median income of $ 27,134 versus $ 18,370 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,780. 15.3 percent of families and 19.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
