The Cochran County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Morton.
geography
The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas, on the border with New Mexico and has an area of 2008 square kilometers with no significant water surface. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Bailey County , Lamb County , Hockley County , Yoakum County, and in New Mexico by counties: Lea County , Roosevelt County, and Home Counties .
history
Cochran County was formed from parts of Bexar County and Young Counties on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed in 1924. It was named after Robert E. Cochran (1810–1836), a soldier who died in the Battle of the Alamo .

As of the 2000 census , Cochran County had 3,730 people in 1,309 households and 1,017 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.48 percent white, 4.53 percent African American, 0.83 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 27.35 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 44.13 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,309 households, 38.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 63.8 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers and 22.3 percent were non-families. 20.9 percent were single households and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.25 people.
31.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 24.9 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 92.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 93.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,525 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,163. Males had a median income of $ 25,064 versus $ 17,652 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,125. 21.4 percent of families and 27.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
