The Washington County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Brenham .

The county is located in east Texas, about halfway to Louisiana and about 120 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the southwest. It has an area of ​​1609 square kilometers, of which 31 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Brazos County , Grimes County , Waller County , Austin County , Fayette County , Lee County, and Burleson Counties .

Washington County was formed as the original county in 1836. It was named after George Washington , the first President of the United States.

As of the 2000 census , Washington County had 30,373 people in 11,322 households and 7,936 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.68 percent white, 18.66 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 1.21 percent Asian and 4.02 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. 8.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 11,322 households, 31.6 percent had children or young people living with them. 54.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, and 29.9 percent were non-families. 25.7 percent were single households and 12.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 people and the average family size was 3.05 people.

24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.1 percent between 18 and 24, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.1 percent between 45 and 64, and 16.9 percent were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,760 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,982. Males had a median income of $ 31,698 versus $ 21,346 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,384. 9.8 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
