geography
The city is located on US Highway 290 , about 120 km northwest of Houston and has a total area of 22.7 km 2 , without any significant water surface.
history
The place was founded as Hickory Grove , but was renamed Brenham in 1843 in honor of Richard Fox Brenham , a doctor and member of several Texas expeditions. In February 1844, the city was elected the seat of county government. Two years later the first post office was opened and with the construction of the Washington County Railroad in 1860, Brenham became the area's merchant hub. It became the most important city in the county when it joined the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in 1880, which connected the city with the Gulf of Mexico region . With the new rail link, new immigrants, mainly German came, of which the 1881 until now-annual May Day festival and for about 25 years the first weekend in December held Krist Kindl Market in Brenham testify.
The Brenham Downtown Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 .
