Bremond is a small town in Robertson County in the state of Texas of the United States .

geography

The city is located in the northwest of the county, near the Falls County border , at the junction of Texas State Route 14 with Highways 46 , 2413 , 1373, and 2293, and is 10 miles east of the Brazos River . The place has a total area of ​​2.4 square kilometers without any significant water surface. The distance to Austin in the southwest is about 160 km, to Dallas in the north about 185 km.

history

The site was founded in 1841 on part of the land by John Peterson who died during the Texas Revolution . It was named after Paul Bremond , a New York- based investor, financier and pioneer of railroad construction who lived in Galveston , Texas from 1839 and was jointly responsible for the construction of several railroad lines in Texas, including the Galveston and Red River Railroad .

On June 15, 1870, a train drove into Bremond for the first time. In the same year a post office, a local newspaper, the Central Texan and the first school were opened. In 1871 there were several shops, six hotels, three doctors, a pharmacy, a lawyer, and the population had already risen to 1,000. In the 1870s, numerous Polish immigrants came to Bremond to grow cotton. Due to the large-scale cultivation of cotton, there was not enough space for small farms and by 1890 the population had fallen to 387.

After Francis Marion Wootan had established in 1878 that the groundwater in the area had a high level of minerals, he founded the spa town of Wootan Wells in the immediate vicinity of Bremond, in which he built four hotels.

In 1916 a fire destroyed Bremond and the fire spread to Wootan Wells, which was completely destroyed by another fire in 1921 and was never rebuilt.

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census, 876 people lived here. 56 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 359 households and 230 families. The population density was 372 inhabitants per square kilometer.
