The Falls County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Marlin .

geography

The county is located east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of ​​2004 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Limestone County , Robertson County , Milam County , Bell County, and McLennan Counties .

history

Falls County was formed on January 28, 1850 from parts of Limestone County and Milam County. The administrative organization was completed on August 5th of the same year. It was named after the waterfalls on the Brazos River .

Two structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of May 19, 2019, the Falls County Courthouse and the Westphalia Rural Historic District .

As of the 2000 census , Falls County had 18,576 people in 6,496 households and 4,410 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 61.50 percent white, 27.45 percent African American, 0.50 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 8.81 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.59 percent were descended from two or more races. 15.83 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,496 households, 30.6 percent had children or young people living with them. 48.2 percent were married couples living together, 15.6 percent were single mothers, and 32.1 percent were non-families. 29.4 percent were single households and 15.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.15 people.

27.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 85.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 74.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,589 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,666. Males had a median income of $ 27,042 versus $ 20,128 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,311. 18.8 percent of families and 22.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
