The Mitchell County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Colorado City .

The county is located approximately 100 km northwest of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of ​​2372 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Scurry County , Nolan County , Coke County , Sterling County, and Howard Counties .

history

Mitchell County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on January 10, 1881. It was named after the brothers Asa (1795-1865) and Eli Mitchell (1797-1870). Asa settled in the American colony of Stephen F. Austin in Mexico from 1822 . He fought Mexico in 1832 in the Battle of Velasco and four years later in the San Jacinto . Eli settled near Velasco in 1824 . He fired the first cannon shot in the battle at Gonzales , with which the Texan Revolution began.

One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 19, 2020, the Scott-Majors House .

According to the 2000 census , Mitchell County had 9,698 people in 2,837 households and 1,997 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.52 percent white, 12.81 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 10.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.03 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

19.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.5 percent between 18 and 24, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 159.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 174.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,399 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,481. Males had a median income of $ 23,750 versus $ 20,221 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,043. 15.0 percent of families and 17.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
