The La Salle County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Cotulla .

geography

The county is located south of the geographic center of Texas and about 50 km to the southwest from the border with Mexico . It has an area of ​​3870 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Frio County , McMullen County , Webb County, and Dimmit County .

history

La Salle County was formed on February 1, 1858 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on November 2, 1880. It was named after Robert Cavelier de La Salle , the French explorer who, among other things, explored the Mississippi River and claimed the interior of North America for the Kingdom of France . He died in a mutiny in what is now Texas.

Three structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 15, 2020, the La Salle County Courthouse , the Cotulla Downtown Historic District and the Cotulla Ranch .

As of the 2000 census , La Salle County had 5,866 people in 1,819 households and 1,351 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.47 percent white, 3.55 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian and 12.21 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.13 percent were descended from two or more races. 77.12 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,819 households, 37.7 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 54.7 percent were married couples living together, 15.4 percent were single mothers and 25.7 percent were non-families. 22.9 percent were single households and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.45 people.

29.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 10.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44, 21.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 113.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 121.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 21,857 , and the median income for a family was $ 25,494. Males had a median income of $ 20,856 versus $ 17,339 for females. The per capita income was 9,692. 29.8 percent of the population 28.2 percent of the families lived below the poverty line.
