The Hale County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Plainview . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas, about 80 km from New Mexico and has an area of 2602 square kilometers, without any significant water surface. The county is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Swisher County , Floyd County , Lubbock County , Lamb County, and Castro Counties .
history
Hale County was formed from parts of Bexar County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed on August 4, 1888. It was named after John C. Hale (1806-1836), who served as a lieutenant in the Texan War of Independence and fell at the Battle of San Jacinto .
Two of the county's sites are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of June 15, 2019. The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Plainview Site prehistoric site .

According to the 2000 census , Hale County had 36,602 people in 11,975 households and 9,136 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.77 percent white, 5.79 percent African American, 0.92 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 23.76 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 47.90 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 11,975 households, 40.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 60.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers and 23.7 percent were non-families. 21.0 percent were single households and 10.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.32 people.
30.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44, 18.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 101.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,280 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,250. Males had a median income of $ 26,007 versus $ 20,057 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,655. 14.3 percent of families and 18.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
